"We have tried to position ourselves as the leaders in the PDR field, both through the innovative training methods that we teach, and in the top quality work that we put out of our retail shop every day" states owner Tony McGrath. He adds: "The fact that Speedvision would come to us really says a lot about the reputation we have built up in our business community". "We do a lot of High End dent removal for companies like BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Acura and Lexus.
The skills we use to repair those vehicles are the same skills we show our trainees how to master every day". "If you are looking for a career in Paintless Dent Removal, you owe it to yourself to start your training with us".
Dent Removal Process Saves Automotive Skin - Tom Hnatiw - Toronto Star
The last time I carried a business card with a title under my name, I worked for a company that, among other things, helps carmakers launch new products to their dealers. Back in '95, we were helping launch the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique in Canada. We had four days to get the show cars ready. Jackie Stewart was going to be there. Jackie Stewart!
We hopped into one of the fully tarted-up V6s to pop over to Ford's agency, a round trip of about 10 km. Not 10 seconds after we got out of the car, some guy in a rusty panel van pulls up beside the thing and bashes it with his door.
I had just read about a process for dent removal that required no painting. I was able to contact a local guy who did this work for dealers. He came over that afternoon and, for $100, made the dent disappear. I was deliriously happy.
Now the process is available to GTA motorists, thanks to Tony McGrath owner of Auto Cosmetic.com. He serves his retail clientelle through the Wheel and Tire Zone in Mississauga. The process involves working at a dent from the back of the panel. Various tools and techniques allow a skilled technician to restore the sheet metal without laying a hand on the paint.
"It's really the paint that's the big difference," said McGrath. "For the last 15 years or so, the process they use to paint cars ends up with a really durable finish. It takes quite a whack to actually crack the paint." So virtually all small and even some large dents can be exorcised, as long as the paint is undamaged.
While preparing this column, it occurred to me that my buddy Hosaki wasn't going to like this. Hosaki, a fellow racer, runs Birchmount Collision.
"I'll tell you what," he said. "I've used paintless dent removal more than once around here. There's no such thing as an OEM-quality paint job at a shop - even Birchmount. So if we can preserve the customer's paint on his high-end car, we're gonna do that."
"Most people can't believe their eyes," says McGrath. "I know I couldn't." The process saves you time; you don't need a rental car. And over the long run, it keeps your car looking better than if you had it repaired and painted the conventional way."
Like any car guy, I needed to know how it worked. So I snooped around a bit. McGrath's tool box is full of things that look like brutalized screwdrivers used to try to pry open a submarine or something. The trick is to be able to reach the back of any given panel without dismantling it. The technician has to have the skill to roll out a dent he can't see from the business end - and use a tool that travels in about three directions at once. Naturally, an important part of the trade is expertise in panel removal and replacement.
I'll bet McGrath knows every single panel fastener on a first-name basis. If you've ever tried to remove and replace a door panel on a modern automobile, you know this is no mean feat.
